Atonement – first-look review

Reed Van Dyk’s directorial debut adapts Dexter Filkins’ 2012 New Yorker article documenting a tragic 2003 incident in Baghdad where US Marines fatally shot members of an Iraqi family in a case of mistaken identity. The narrative follows the subsequent attempt at reconciliation between the surviving family, led by Margaret Kachadoorian, and former Marine Lu Lobello, who seeks forgiveness years later. Featuring Boyd Holbrook, Hiam Abbass, and Kenneth Branagh, the film explores themes of military accountability, victim support, and cross-cultural healing. While cinematographer Jon Peter’s visual composition and Zak Engel’s woodwind score provide technical competence, the reviewer contends the film’s balanced approach to its morally complex material results in an emotionally uneven war drama that fails to fully exploit its thematically rich source material.
